What Makes A Hero Hot?
Summer is winding down, but there’s still the Hot Summer Heroes Blog Hop.
What makes a hero hot? I would say that it’s having a good sense of humor, being able to laugh at himself, but not make fun of people. I would also say it’s going above and beyond the call of duty to the heroine, his family and friends. He may not be the typical Alpha male on the inside or the outside, but he’s a hero nonetheless. Jay Galloway, the hero of “Mr. Short, Dark…& Funny” is like that. He’s got a great sense of humor, and one of the Galloway Family’s Ten Commandments is “Thou shalt laugh at thyself.” He made sacrifices for his sister when their parents died, and although he gets aggravated with Reese Elliott, the heroine’s dad, who is in the early stages of dementia, he realizes his mistake and saves the day.

Another thing that makes a hero hot is there being more to him than meets the eye. Scotty Caldwell, the hero of “Mr. Tall, Tan…& Tasteless,” is tall and tan and pretty good-looking, but some people see him as a couch potato without much ambition. There is way more to him than meets the eye. Readers said he didn’t realize that his best friend’s sister was in love with him until she finally told him. The truth is that he did realize it all along. He just didn’t act on his feelings because Lorrie Galloway had a “no dating friends, especially her brother’s best friend” policy. In the sequel, “Tasteless Holidays,” Scotty proves that there’s more to him than meets the eye when he has to do whatever it takes for his marriage.

There’s more than meets the eye to the hero of “Sweeter Than W(h)ine,” Dr. Rafe Farber, as well. Yes, he’s tall, dark and handsome, but he has memories of the past that he can’t share with anyone, even the beautiful Dina Edelman. He masks his pain with jokes and surrounds himself with the good things in life like expensive chocolate and a well-cared for but fancy home. He soon realizes that he has to share some of this with Dina and this makes him more appealing to her.

  1. What makes a hero hot to me is that they are fiercely protective to those they care about but what really reves my engines so to speak is sarcasm. I am not sure why but if the guy can get me to laugh and laugh hard I find it extremely sexy.

  6. A sense of humor is very important, but we also must address sex appeal; a hero must be hot to his lover. It doesn’t matter if he’s hot to anyone else, only her opinion matters. I think strength (internal, not necessarily external, though that’s nice, too), bravery, integrity, kindness, gentleness, thoughtfulness, and considerateness are important. It’s also vital that the hero recognize his mate as his equal. He must also love animals or it’s no-go. Thanks for the opportunity. michelle_willms@yahoo.com

  7. Thanks for commenting, Michelle. Good luck on the hop. I agree with all you had to say, especially the part about loving animals. A lot of my work has animals in it. Jay, the hero of “Mr. Short, Dark…& Funny,” has two bulldogs, Bulldog and Barks. Lorrie Galloway, the heroine of “Mr. Tall, Tan…& Tasteless,” finds an abandoned kitten and adopts her. And the hero of “My Short, Dark and Funny Valentine” is a veterinarian. So my heroes definitely have to love animals.

  9. I love your idea of a hot hero 🙂 Someone who isn’t afraid to laugh at himself is incredibly charming! Men who take themselves too seriously are generally unappealing! I think your three heroes sound like they themselves are a great collection of hot heroes as well!

For me, their ability to laugh at themselves is a great characteristic, as well as someone who is strong yet vulnerable, somewhat possessive and protective and who is thoughtfully romantic. It’s ALWAYS about the little things 🙂

Thank you for sharing and for a wonderful giveaway!

    • Thanks, Marie–and I agree about the little things. One of my favorite scenes is in “Mr. Tall, Tan…& Tasteless” when Scotty tries to lip sync a song to Lorrie (because he can’t sing) and Jay mistakes him for a robber and punches him in the stomach and they both start cracking up when Jay realizes his mistake.

Thanks for stopping by and good luck on the hop!

  11. Hi! Its all of it, but mostly actions. For me, i love an alpha hero, someone brave, protecting there own, helping, and i love a bit of cockiness. And they have to have a bit of humor! And how the heroine reacts to him. I love the first meeting between characters, especially when its explosive! Thank you for sharing and for the awesome hop & giveaways!
